A disappointing morning

I read (ok I actually just scan) a lot of blogs on most mornings. Mostly to see what is going on, sometimes to find good stuff to steal and post here.

This morning I was very disappointed to see that several liberal bloggers chose to post a YouTube video called something like the 12 gay days of Christmas. Now don't get me wrong, it is an very funny, if unfortunately poor quality video. But it would have been just as funny if the word gay had not been placed in the title. I can only assume that gay was added because the 12 men were prancing (I can think of no other word to describe it) around to the song. Like I said, very funny, but also a very stereotypical title.

My disappointment was not in my liberal blog friends choice to post it, but in their failure to at least comment on the stereotypical nature of the use of the term gay to describe it.

In fact, the notes in the post at YouTube specifically indicate a comment that the sexuality of the dancers is not necessarily gay. Which only goes to prove that straight men can prance too!

So I'm disappointed to see the continued support of stereotypes in liberal blogs. It is rather sad.

I hear you, Robert. Shoot, you're a veteran of one of most "butch" branches of the Armed forces (Coasties do everything the Navy does but in lots worse weather!). My friend H. who I have known for 30 years, runs triathalons. (H. and I joke that he vicariously went to medical school with me and I vicarously came out of the closet with him, and we are not sure which is toughest!)

But although we have become a much more gay-friendly culture, people still certainly like to cling to the "swishy" and "butch" stereotypes. Of course, it took a long time to give up on tap-dancing African-Americans, too...
