thought for today

Charity depends on the vicissitudes of whim and personal wealth; justice depends on commitment instead of circumstance. Faith-based charity provides crumbs from the table; faith-based justice offers a place at the table.

thought for today

A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.

Charity and Compassion

Another excellent post from the blog of Fr. Tobias Haller, BSG. A link to his blog can be found on my listing of links.

Thought for 05.15.08
from In a Godward direction by Tobias Haller

Charitable feelings are of no use
without acts of charity.
Compassionate feelings are of no use
without acts of compassion.
Loving feelings are useless
unless they lead to acts of love.
The Priest and Levite may well have felt sorry
for the wounded man
as they steered a course past him,
and the Samaritan who stopped to help
may have been muttering
under his breath
at the inconvenience
the whole time.
How they felt
was immaterial to the wounded man.
