It is all in the clothing

Thanks to Fr. David Heron for this jewel.

The Clue is in the Shirt
from Anglican Priest Father David Heron by noreply@blogger.com (Father David Heron)

Ruth Gledhill points out in today's Times +Rowan's preference for clerical black. Favoured by Anglo and Roman Catholic Bishops, this humble colour tends to denote theological soundness.
The Episcopal purple denotes the fact that someone has been promoted, and wishes to flaunt it. Bishops in blue wish to show how they are just ordinary guys who love Jesus and hate gays.
Archbishops in a shirt and tie unwittingly reveal
that they are completely and utterly mad.

I have always seen it in terms of the old debate between archbishops when arguing over supremecy. One declared themself to be the Supreme leader of the church. The other in retaliation declared himself the servent of all. By wearing the black of a priest instead of the purple of a bishop he points out he is the servent of all and so highlights his authority.. but i am a cyinic!
